How OpenVids compares to the editors you know.

OpenVids is a free, open-source, agent-first video editor for macOS and Windows. These pages compare it with five popular editors, cite the vendors’ own pages, and say plainly when the other tool is the better choice.

How to pick a video editor

No editor wins on every line. Start with five questions:

  • Where do you edit? Desktop, browser or phone, and on which operating system.
  • How do you want to pay? Free, a subscription, or a one-time purchase.
  • What’s the job? Social clips, spoken-word shows, color and finishing, or story-led edits from interviews and b-roll.
  • How should AI help? Tools you apply by hand, generators that make new footage, or agents that edit your timeline while you review.
  • Where should your media live? On your disk, or in a vendor’s cloud.

Each comparison page answers those questions for one tool, links to the vendor’s own pages, and ends with a plain list of when to choose the other editor.

What makes OpenVids different

Agents on a real timeline
Four agents (Main, Motion Designer, Audio and Research) work in Ask, Plan or Edit mode. Every result lands as a change you can review, and you can take over the timeline at any point. The agents.
Story Graph
The film lives in chapters; Build turns them into a cut. How it works.
Render QA
An agent watches every render the way a viewer would, fixes what it can, and leaves the editorial calls to you.
Sources and licenses
Research finds footage and keeps track of licenses and credits. Research and licenses.
Free and open source
The code, issues and releases are on GitHub. Your media stays on your disk.
What it doesn’t have
No web, mobile or Linux version. OpenVids is a desktop app for macOS and Windows.
