Who DaVinci Resolve is for

Blackmagic Design builds Resolve as one application for editing, color, visual effects and motion graphics (Fusion), audio (Fairlight) and, in version 21, photos.1 It is aimed at professionals but pitched as fast to learn for new users, and it runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.1

The free version is generous: it works with “virtually all 8-bit video formats” at up to 60 fps and Ultra HD, and includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading.2 DaVinci Resolve Studio, a one-time $295 as of October 2026, adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, text-based editing, Magic Mask, and 10-bit video at up to 120 fps and beyond 4K.1,2 Neural Engine features include smart reframe, object removal, voice isolation and SuperScale.4 See Blackmagic’s comparison.

Resolve 21 adds IntelliSearch, which finds media by objects, dialog or faces, and IntelliScript, which builds a timeline by matching a script to transcribed audio.3

Where OpenVids differs

Agents, not pages
Instead of moving between editing, color, Fusion and Fairlight yourself, you describe the work and an agent does it: Main on the cut, Motion Designer on titles, Audio on dialogue and music, Research on sources.
Story Graph
IntelliScript starts from a script.3 The Story Graph starts from chapters: agents attach shots, sound and motion, and Build turns the graph into a cut.
Review loop
Every result is a change you can review, and you can take over the timeline at any point.
Render QA and sources
An agent watches every render; Research tracks licenses and credits.
Open source
The code, issues and releases are on GitHub. Your media stays on your disk.
What it isn’t
OpenVids doesn’t claim a color-grading suite, node-based VFX or an audio post room. If that’s the job, Resolve is the tool.

Which one to choose

Here’s when each one is the better pick.

Choose DaVinci Resolve if…

  • Color grading is the job.1
  • You need Fusion VFX, Fairlight audio post, multicam or finishing deliverables.2
  • You work on Linux or need multi-user collaboration.1
  • You want a free start with a one-time paid upgrade.1,2

Choose OpenVids if…

  • You want the editor itself to be open source.
  • You’d rather direct the edit in words than drive every tool by hand.
  • Your projects are story-led: interviews, explainers, trailers.
  • You want renders checked and sources’ licenses tracked.
